5 Signs Your Knee Osteoarthritis Needs Attention

Knee osteoarthritis is a progressive condition — the earlier you recognize the warning signs, the more treatment options you have. Here are the five key signals that tell you it's time to see a specialist.

1. Morning Stiffness That Lasts More Than 30 Minutes

A knee that feels locked or stiff for more than half an hour after waking up is a classic early sign of osteoarthritis. The cartilage lining the joint is thinning, and the joint needs time to 'warm up' with synovial fluid.

2. Clicking or Grating Sounds

A clicking or grinding sensation (crepitus) when you bend or straighten the knee is caused by bone surfaces rubbing against each other as the protective cartilage wears down.

3. Swelling After Activity

Post-activity swelling — also called an effusion — happens when the synovial membrane becomes inflamed and produces excess fluid. This is your knee's way of signaling internal stress.

4. Difficulty Climbing Stairs or Getting Up

When routine activities — climbing stairs, rising from a chair, getting in and out of a car — become painful challenges, the joint has deteriorated significantly enough to affect daily function.

5. Reduced Range of Motion

Inability to fully extend or flex the knee is a sign that the joint space is narrowing and the bone surfaces are increasingly in contact. Early intervention — before full-thickness cartilage loss — significantly improves outcomes.

If you recognize two or more of these signs, book a consultation with Prof. Dr. Mohamed Kamal at Bone Art Clinic. A precise diagnosis — not waiting — is always the first step toward getting your life back in motion.
